How this database is built

We read every press release the Justice Department and the 94 U.S. Attorney's Offices publish on justice.gov, starting January 20, 2025. A release is included when it announces a charge, plea, verdict, sentence or civil settlement for fraud against a federal benefit or relief program. Each record is tagged with:

Each row is one press release, not one case, so amounts should not be added up. Weekly digests and national takedown summaries are excluded, and duplicate releases are merged. Press releases do not cover every federal fraud case; use the counts as a guide to what prosecutors announce, not as an official tally. If you spot an error, tell us and we will fix it.

Frequently asked questions

Where does this fraud case data come from?

Every record is a press release published by the U.S. Department of Justice or a U.S. Attorney's Office on justice.gov. We classify each one by program, state and stage and link to the original. The database was last rebuilt on October 20, 2026.

Does a case listed here mean someone is guilty?

No. Records at the Charged stage are allegations. Defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court. Later stages (guilty plea, conviction, sentencing) are listed as separate records when the DOJ announces them.

What does the dollar amount mean?

It is the figure the press release ties to the defendant's scheme: the alleged loss, the restitution ordered, the amount billed or the settlement paid. The Basis column says which. Because the same case can appear at several stages, amounts should not be added up.

Can I download the data?

Yes. The full table is available as CSV and JSON under a Creative Commons Attribution license. Please cite WHIP Reward and link to the original DOJ releases.
