The Future Leaders case

According to the Justice Department's case summary, Mahamud was charged with one count of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States, involving $5,480,329 in federal funds: about $4.6 million in Child Care Assistance Program money the center was not entitled to, and about $854,000 in federal child nutrition funds obtained through Feeding Our Future. She pleaded guilty to both counts in July 2026; sentencing had not been set.

Not every claim in the video held up. AP reported that state inspectors found the featured centers operating as expected when they visited.

How Shirley's award differs from the written rules

The program's terms pay individuals who voluntarily submit "original information in writing" through America.gov/fraud, at the time charges are filed. Information that is "contained entirely" in news media is not original unless the tipster was its source. Shirley's reporting was public ten months before the program existed, and no DOJ document has described his award. It is best read as a ceremonial first payout. Tips submitted from now on are judged under the written process; see how to submit.

We track every award, named or not, on the awards page. Child care fraud cases the DOJ has announced are in the fraud case database.
